FOUNDATION

We have settled back in after the holidays and are working well.

The first week back was NAIDOC week and as part of that we learnt a little about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. During Art that week, we tried out some simple dot paintings. We learnt about the Torres Strait Islander flag and the Aboriginal flag and coloured in and designed our own using the colours of the Aboriginal flag. Yellow for the sun, red for the land and black for the people. We also listened to some indigenous music and had a go at using clapping sticks to try to follow the beat.

In Maths, we continued working with the numbers 1-20, putting them in order and matching them to their value. We have also began using addition and showing it using + and = symbols as well as showing it with pictures. We are adding single numbers up to 10 to get answers up to 20. The Foundation class has been doing this quite well. We are also practising our numbers and subtilizing (instantly recognising visual representations of numbers) to 10. The students are very much into these songs and are becoming more confident. We are also practising counting to 100 and skip counting by 2’s.

For English, I am encouraging them to write independently and to know our writing goals:

We are also being introduced to 2 letter sounds and so far we have looked at “th” and “sh”. For the “th” sound we made coloured baths and wrote other words that ended with “th”.

For Science, our first unit is Weather so we wrote our own “I wonder” questions on clouds and so far we have answered 1 question about how rainbows are formed. We have also looked at weather symbols and drawn them to describe the day’s weather. We will also be focusing on the seasons and months of the year as part of this unit.

In ICT, around half the class can now log into the computer independently, great work guys! We are continuing to use Word to write our names, copy a sentence from the board and we have been using shapes or picture search to add a picture to our work. Students have also been changing fonts, sizes and colours of their text. I’ve been very impressed by those who managed to finish their work.

For Art this term, we are focusing on models. In week 2, we made paper plate watermelons and the early finishers then tried, apples, oranges and strawberries. They look great!

For National Tree Day as well as wearing green, we talked about why we need trees to make oxygen and for our food. We planted some sunflowers and we will wait for them to grow and we made some tissue paper leaf trees.
